National Board certification is considered the gold standard for excellence in teaching. A voluntary assessment program designed to develop, recognize and retain accomplished teachers, National Board certification is achieved through a performance-based assessment that typically takes one to three years to complete. Certification lasts 10 years, then may be renewed for an additional 10 years. More information is available at www.nbpts.org.
